I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. We used to spend a lot of time together, and I’d like to ask the doctor: Is epilepsy contagious? Can it be cured?

Epilepsy is not contagious. It is a paroxysmal neurological disorder falling under the domain of neurology and has no infectious nature. However, it does have a genetic component; individuals with a family history of epilepsy are at higher risk of developing the condition. Pharmacotherapy remains the primary treatment modality for epilepsy. With standardized treatment, some forms of epilepsy can be effectively controlled—or even cured—whereas others cannot be completely eradicated and may involve frequent seizures, potentially leading to comorbid psychiatric disorders over time.
