Disease description:

My friend underwent ePTFE rhinoplasty three days ago, and her nose is now slightly red and swollen—this may indicate an infection. What are the symptoms of infection following ePTFE rhinoplasty?

Symptoms of infection following expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) rhinoplasty primarily include redness and swelling. Postoperatively, the nose fails to subside from swelling and becomes increasingly painful. In early stages, some patients may notice warmth or heat upon palpation of the nasal area, accompanied by swelling and erythema extending to the forehead and periorbital regions. If redness and swelling persist beyond one week—and show minimal improvement even after anti-inflammatory injections—yellowish discharge may begin to emerge from the incision site near the nostrils; in advanced cases, purulent discharge may occur. At this point, the ePTFE implant must be surgically removed, as infections involving ePTFE are notoriously difficult to control with antibiotics alone.
