What should I do if my feet swell after sitting or standing for long periods?
Disease description:
What should I do if my feet swell after prolonged sitting? I work as an office clerk and typically work over 10 hours daily—often including late-night shifts. Previously, I thought my health was fine, but now my feet swell after sitting for extended periods. I’m unsure what condition this might indicate.
Swelling in the feet after prolonged sitting or standing indicates venous reflux—backward flow of blood in the veins—leading to increased interstitial fluid accumulation in the feet. To address this, measures should be taken to promote venous return: minimize prolonged sitting; if seated for extended periods, stand up and move around regularly. At night, place a pillow under your feet while sleeping to elevate the lower limbs, which facilitates venous return. Oral medications such as Aescin (Aescuven®) or Diosmin (Diosmin®) may be used to enhance vascular tone and reduce leg and foot edema. If lower-limb swelling progressively worsens, seek prompt medical evaluation to assess for potential cardiac or renal abnormalities. Maintain a light, low-sodium diet; avoid excessive salt intake, chronic sleep deprivation, and ensure adequate rest.
