Side Effects of Glutathione

Oral glutathione is associated with relatively few adverse effects. Very rarely, patients may experience palpitations, dyspnea, tachypnea, cough, or asthma; allergic reactions—including rash and anaphylactic shock—may also occur. Some individuals with preexisting gastrointestinal disorders may develop appetite loss, nausea, vomiting, or epigastric pain. Cutaneous adverse effects include rash, pruritus, hyperhidrosis, urticaria, maculopapular eruption, and flushing. Although adverse effects of glutathione are uncommon, a thorough review of the patient’s history of drug allergy is essential prior to initiating therapy. Patients with a known history of drug allergy require close monitoring for adverse reactions following administration.
