IgM is one type of antiphospholipid antibody. It primarily binds to red blood cells via complement components on their surface, thereby activating the complement cascade and leading to hemolytic anemia. Thus, elevated IgM levels strongly suggest hemolytic anemia; prompt treatment of the underlying condition is essential, along with administration of platelet-increasing medications. Elevated IgM may also be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Following detection of elevated IgM, further diagnostic tests are required to identify the precise etiology, and aggressive management of the primary disease is warranted. Additionally, platelet-boosting medications should be administered, and platelet transfusion should be performed promptly when clinically indicated.
