What Are the Different Types of Intrauterine Devices (IUDs)?
Disease description:
I already have two children and do not plan to have any more, so I’d like to have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted for contraception. However, my doctor asked me to choose a specific type. Could you please tell me how many types of IUDs are available?
Types of Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCDs):
1. Inert IUCDs: These are first-generation IUCDs made from inert materials such as metal, silicone, plastic, or nylon. In China, the stainless steel ring is the most commonly used type.
2. Active IUCDs: These are second-generation IUCDs containing biologically active substances—such as metals, hormones, drugs, or magnetic materials—which enhance contraceptive efficacy and reduce side effects. Currently, active IUCDs are the preferred choice for intrauterine contraception in China.
