I am approaching my due date, and my doctor has advised me to be admitted for observation to prevent the risk of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). Could you please explain what PPROM is?

Dr. Zhang Chunxia
Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) suggests that the patient may have vaginal inflammation. PROM refers to the rupture of fetal membranes before the fetus reaches term (i.e., prior to 37 weeks’ gestation). Normally, the membranes rupture only after the fetus has reached full term, at which point labor begins and the fetus is delivered. However, in many cases, membrane rupture occurs prematurely. PROM poses significant risks both to the pregnant woman and to the fetus. The greatest threat associated with PROM is preterm birth, which may lead to fetal intrauterine distress and symptoms such as respiratory difficulty.
