What Causes Yellow Vaginal Discharge in Women?
Disease description:
Recently, my vaginal discharge has turned yellow and has an unpleasant odor. What are the possible causes of yellow vaginal discharge in women?
There are numerous causes of yellow vaginal discharge in women. These may include frequent late-night activity, internal “heat” (a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine referring to inflammatory or hyperactive conditions), and insufficient water intake—factors that can collectively lead to an internal “heat” condition. Alternatively, yellow discharge may indicate infections such as trichomoniasis vaginitis, candidal (yeast) vaginitis, or chronic cervicitis. Characteristic symptoms of these conditions include yellowish vaginal discharge, progressively increased discharge volume, menstrual irregularities, and dysmenorrhea.
Other potential causes include pyometra (pus accumulation in the uterine cavity), cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, or retained foreign material within the vagina—all of which may also result in yellow vaginal discharge. Additionally, adnexitis (inflammation of the fallopian tubes and ovaries) and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) often present with yellow, viscous, foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
