What should I do if my hand swells during intravenous (IV) infusion?
Disease description:
Today, I didn’t notice during my outpatient IV infusion, and now my hand is swollen—what should I do?
Swelling of the hand during intravenous (IV) infusion requires immediate cessation of the infusion. Next, apply cold compresses to the IV site. If no bleeding occurs, warm compresses may be applied approximately 6 hours later to promote blood circulation and alleviate swelling. Additionally, if signs such as redness, swelling, warmth, or pain appear around the injection site, this may indicate phlebitis; in such cases, moist compresses with magnesium sulfate should be used for relief.
