Can I eat before undergoing a nucleic acid test for COVID-19?
Disease description:
Our unit conducts nucleic acid testing every week. I would like to ask whether it is permissible to eat before undergoing nucleic acid testing.
In most cases, patients may eat normally before undergoing SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid testing; fasting is not required. Nucleic acid testing involves collecting a sample via oropharyngeal or nasopharyngeal swab. Specifically, the sampling swab is gently rubbed against the mucosal surface of the throat or nasal cavity to obtain the specimen, which is then tested. Eating prior to sample collection does not affect test results, so there is no need for excessive concern.
