What Causes Hypoechoic Thyroid Nodules?
Disease description:
Today’s imaging examination revealed a hypoechoic nodule in the thyroid gland. What causes this condition?
During imaging examinations, hypoechoic thyroid nodules are most commonly caused by intrinsic thyroid diseases—for example, hyperthyroidism or thyroiditis may both present with hypoechoic thyroid nodules. However, such findings can also indicate malignant thyroid nodules; therefore, patients are advised to undergo fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy to rule out malignancy.
