How long after taking emergency contraception can I drink alcohol?
Disease description:
I took emergency contraception, and my friend invited me to drink alcohol. I’m worried about adverse reactions—how long after taking emergency contraception is it safe to drink alcohol?
Generally, alcohol consumption should be avoided for at least 24 hours after taking emergency contraceptive pills. Alcohol can readily trigger a disulfiram-like reaction with the active pharmaceutical ingredients in these contraceptives, potentially causing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and vomiting in women. Moreover, drinking alcohol within 24 hours of taking emergency contraception may significantly impair the drug’s efficacy, increasing the risk of contraceptive failure. Therefore, alcohol must be avoided for at least 24 hours following administration of emergency contraceptive pills.
