Disease description:

Today, during my physical examination, when my blood pressure was measured, the doctor mentioned that my pulse pressure was widened. What causes chronically widened pulse pressure?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Liu Aifen
A widened pulse pressure refers to an abnormally large difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure. A chronically widened pulse pressure is commonly associated with hypertension and aortic atherosclerosis. Prolonged hypertension can impair coronary perfusion, causing the heart to operate under sustained overload—thereby contributing to an increased pulse pressure. Aortic atherosclerosis reduces arterial elasticity, which also leads to a chronically widened pulse pressure. Additionally, hyperthyroidism and anemia are other potential causes of persistently elevated pulse pressure.
