Disease description:

My son bought a laser pointer and plays with it frequently. I would like to ask: What are the potential hazards of laser pointers to the eyes?

Dr. Zhang Wenbo
Laser pointers can damage the macula—the central part of the retina. The stronger the laser beam, the more permanent and irreversible the damage becomes. Moreover, the human eye has a natural focusing effect, which makes it easy for laser pointer light to concentrate onto the retina, thereby readily injuring ocular tissues. Immediately after exposure to a laser pointer, temporary glare occurs, causing blurred vision in all directions. In severe cases, a black spot may appear in the center of the visual field. We strongly advise against playing with laser pointers.
