Buckwheat tea (made from tartary buckwheat) has laxative and detoxifying effects. In general, moderate consumption of buckwheat tea does not adversely affect the body; however, excessive intake may lead to spleen-stomach deficiency-cold or hypoglycemia. Because buckwheat tea is inherently cold in nature, overconsumption may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. Prolonged excessive intake may result in spleen-stomach deficiency-cold, manifesting as cold limbs, clear watery vomiting, and loose stools. Additionally, buckwheat tea contains rutin, which promotes insulin secretion and helps lower blood glucose levels; thus, excessive consumption may precipitate hypoglycemic symptoms—including fatigue, tremors, and sweating.
