What does it mean to detect prostatic calcification on a physical examination?
Disease description:
I had a physical examination last week, and a transrectal ultrasound revealed prostatic calcification. What does “prostatic calcification” detected during a physical exam mean?
Prostatic calcifications primarily result from localized deposition of calcium salts in the prostate gland. They commonly appear as residual calcified spots following resolution of prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Most patients remain asymptomatic and typically do not require specific treatment. However, in a small subset of patients, excessive prostatic calcifications may readily progress to prostatic calculi (stones), necessitating timely medical intervention.
