If a person’s fingernails appear purple, the underlying cause should first be identified. If the discoloration results from trauma (e.g., blunt injury), topical medications that promote blood circulation and resolve stasis may be applied, along with oral anti-inflammatory drugs for treatment. Exposure to severe cold can also cause purple discoloration of the fingertips; in such cases, keeping the fingers and nails adequately warm is essential. Additionally, internal medical conditions—such as heart disease or pulmonary disorders—may lead to cyanosis of the fingertips. In these instances, prompt evaluation at a reputable hospital is necessary for comprehensive diagnostic testing and targeted treatment.
