Does using a condom prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
Disease description:
I recently had a one-night stand and am worried about contracting an STI. I used a condom—does using a condom fully protect against sexually transmitted infections?
Consistent and correct use of condoms is highly effective in preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many STIs—including HIV/AIDS and syphilis—are primarily transmitted through sexual intercourse. When used properly, condoms effectively create a barrier between semen and vaginal secretions, preventing the exchange of bacteria between sexual partners and thereby significantly reducing the risk of infection. Additionally, condom use during intercourse benefits women by preventing the introduction of bacteria from the male genitalia into the female vagina, and also helps prevent unintended pregnancy.
