The lunula (half-moon-shaped mark) reflects the strength of nutrient absorption and the speed of peripheral blood circulation; a small lunula indicates poor peripheral circulation. The development of the lunula varies with changes in nutrition, environmental factors, and overall physical fitness. Normally, there are 8–10 lunulae across all fingers; they appear milky white and typically occupy about one-fifth of the nail’s surface area. A lunula occupying less than one-fifth of the nail suggests impaired gastrointestinal function and poor nutrient absorption, whereas a lunula larger than one-fifth may be associated with conditions such as myocardial hypertrophy, cardiovascular/cerebrovascular disease, and hypertension.
