Why Do Babies’ Sclerae Appear Blue?
Disease description:
My baby was only a few days old when I noticed that the whites of his eyes appeared bluish. What causes bluish sclera in infants?
A bluish tint in an infant’s sclera (the “white” of the eye) may be a normal physiological phenomenon. Because infants are very young, their sclera is typically thinner, making the underlying choroidal blood vessels more visible and thus imparting a bluish hue. It may also result from pigment deposition on the conjunctiva. However, elevated intraocular pressure cannot be ruled out as a potential cause. We recommend consulting a reputable pediatric hospital for appropriate diagnostic evaluation to determine the underlying cause and guide targeted management.
