Why does my baby’s stool appear loose and foamy?
Disease description:
My baby’s bowel movements have always been normal, but this morning his stool contained foam. I’m very concerned—what could cause foamy, loose stools in babies?
The primary causes of diarrhea and foamy stools in infants are as follows:
First, indigestion—consuming excessive amounts of sugary or starchy foods can lead to fermentation of undigested food in the intestines, resulting in loose, foamy stools.
Second, maternal diet during breastfeeding—if the mother consumes overly greasy or fatty foods, it may cause foamy stools in her breastfed infant.
For formula-fed infants, foamy stools may result from over-concentrated formula (excessive powder per volume of water) or overfeeding.
