What is inside a pimple?
Disease description:
I’ve developed several pimples on my face. Today, when I squeezed one, I noticed a white substance inside. What exactly is this white material composed of?
The substance inside pimples consists primarily of secretions from the pilosebaceous unit (i.e., hair follicles and sebaceous glands). Pimples—also known as acne lesions—are small, raised bumps on the skin. These bumps may appear white or red, or may be red with a white or black tip (whiteheads or blackheads, respectively). Their contents mainly comprise sebum and other metabolic byproducts of sebaceous gland activity.
