Disease description:

Lately, I’ve been craving oranges particularly, but I’ve had a gout flare-up these past two days, accompanied by widespread pain. I’d like to ask my doctor: Is it safe to eat oranges during a gout episode?

Patients with gout may consume oranges in moderation. Oranges contain relatively low levels of purines and therefore will not exacerbate gout symptoms; thus, they are safe for gout patients to eat. We recommend that you adhere to prescribed anti-gout medication therapy. In daily life, drink plenty of water—aim for over 2,000 mL per day—and increase your intake of alkaline foods. Avoid beer, seafood, organ meats (e.g., liver, kidney), kelp, spinach, and other high-purine foods. Schedule regular follow-up examinations to monitor and control your condition. Strict dietary restrictions are essential for gout patients: maintain a low-purine diet and avoid high-purine foods such as fatty meats, organ meats, seafood, and meat broths. Ensure adequate hydration by drinking more than 2,000 mL of water daily.
