I’ve recently been craving nuts, but my gout has flared up over the past few days. I’m unsure whether it’s safe for me to eat them, so I’d like to ask: Can people with gout eat nuts?

Gout patients should limit their intake of nuts. Nuts are classified as low-purine foods, with purine content lower than that of soybeans and most legumes. For example, walnuts contain 25 mg of purine per 100 g, Brazil nuts 23 mg, hazelnuts 37 mg, and peanuts slightly higher at 79 mg. In comparison, tofu contains 68 mg, soybeans 190 mg, and pork 150 mg per 100 g. Most nuts are high in fat; excessive consumption can easily lead to fat accumulation and obesity. Adipose tissue inhibits uric acid excretion; once uric acid elimination is impaired, even strict dietary control of purine intake may prove ineffective.
