Can patients with gout consume honey?
Disease description:
The cause of my own gout has kept me resting at home. During this time, I’ve been cautious about my diet and avoided eating anything indiscriminately. I’d like to know: Can people with gout consume honey?
Gout patients may consume honey in moderation but should avoid excessive intake. This is because honey contains a large amount of fructose and is therefore considered a high-fructose food. Consuming large amounts of fructose over a short period can cause a transient increase in serum uric acid levels in gout patients, potentially triggering gouty arthritis attacks and impairing long-term control of uric acid levels. In addition to honey, gout patients should also limit their intake of other high-fructose beverages, including fruit juices and soft drinks. Many adolescent gout patients develop the condition due to excessive consumption of fructose-rich juices and beverages.
