Can people with gout eat roasted duck?
Disease description:
After my father was diagnosed with gout, he has avoided eating poultry altogether. However, his gout has never been fully resolved. I’d like to ask: Is roast duck safe for people with gout?
It is not recommended for patients with gout to consume roast duck. Gout results from elevated serum uric acid levels, which subsequently form urate crystals that deposit in the joints, triggering localized joint inflammation. Any food that may raise serum uric acid levels can potentially trigger a gout attack. Foods high in purines—particularly meats such as beef, lamb, duck, and fish—tend to increase serum uric acid. Roast duck is relatively high in purines and thus classified as a high-purine food; therefore, it is not advisable for gout patients to eat it.
