Disease description:

My father has been quite busy lately and has been eating more purple sweet potatoes. However, he has had gout for several years, and it hasn’t been completely cured yet. I’d like to ask: Is it safe for people with gout to eat purple sweet potatoes?

Dr. Pan Yongyuan
Gout patients can consume purple sweet potatoes, which generally have no adverse effect on their condition; therefore, patients need not be overly anxious. Purple sweet potatoes are rich in vitamins, pectin, starch, and protein, and—importantly—contain no purines. Thus, moderate consumption of purple sweet potatoes may offer certain benefits to gout patients, such as improved vision and enhanced nutritional intake. Nevertheless, gout patients must pay close attention to their diet: they should limit intake of high-purine foods to prevent elevated serum uric acid levels, which could severely impact their health. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
