Can individuals with high uric acid levels consume high-protein foods?
Disease description:
I personally enjoy eating high-protein foods—I follow a fitness-oriented, low-fat diet. However, I have hyperuricemia. May I ask: Is it safe for individuals with elevated uric acid levels to consume high-protein foods?
Patients with hyperuricemia should consume high-protein foods according to their individual circumstances. Common high-protein foods—such as milk and eggs—are generally safe for individuals with elevated uric acid levels and serve as excellent sources of protein, especially during the period before serum uric acid levels have normalized. However, other meats and legumes contain relatively high purine levels; therefore, consuming them may further elevate uric acid levels in patients with hyperuricemia.
