What should I do if a mosquito bite becomes infected and produces pus?
Disease description:
I’m 22 years old this year, and I’ve been getting bitten by mosquitoes frequently lately. I’d like to know what to do if a mosquito bite becomes infected and forms pus.
Pus formation at a mosquito bite site indicates a bacterial infection; therefore, acute bacterial infection must be treated first—typically with oral antibiotics, most commonly cephalosporins. Topical antibacterial agents—such as mupirocin ointment or sodium fusidate—should also be applied to rapidly control the signs of bacterial infection. Once the infection has resolved, topical medications specifically for mosquito bites may then be used.
