Does oily hair lead to hair loss?
Disease description:
I have oily skin, and my hair becomes oily after just two days without washing. Now that I’m getting older, I’m also concerned about increased hair shedding. Does having oily hair make one more prone to hair loss?
Excessive scalp oiliness is associated with hair loss to some extent; however, oily hair alone does not necessarily lead to hair loss. In general, when oily hair coincides with hair loss, it may indicate seborrheic alopecia—a condition linked to genetic factors and androgen activity. Treatment options depend on the individual’s specific condition and may include oral medications or topical therapies. Topical treatments include minoxidil solution, while oral medications include finasteride. It is recommended that patients use these medications only under the guidance of a physician.
