Disease description:

My uncle has been diagnosed with a renal tumor, and the doctor said it measures only 3 cm—so it doesn’t seem very serious. Could you please clarify whether a 3-cm renal tumor is considered early-stage?

A 3-cm renal tumor without peripheral lymph node metastasis or distant organ metastasis is classified as early-stage kidney cancer. At this stage, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is confined to the kidney, and the maximum tumor diameter is less than 7 cm. For clinically detected 3-cm early-stage RCC, radical surgical resection is the most important treatment modality—and indeed the fundamental treatment for early-stage RCC. Additionally, regional lymph node dissection should be performed as necessary.
