Can kidney stones cause hematuria (blood in the urine)?
Disease description:
My father has kidney stones and only went to the hospital for treatment today. Could kidney stones cause hematuria (blood in the urine)?
Patients with kidney stones may experience hematuria; however, the majority of patients with kidney stones are asymptomatic. Nevertheless, prolonged irritation of the renal pelvis mucosa by kidney stones can lead to capillary rupture, resulting in bleeding and hematuria. Additionally, if kidney stones migrate into the ureter or urethra, they may damage the mucosa of these structures, causing an abnormal increase in red blood cells in the urine and leading to gross hematuria.
