What Causes Scaly Skin on the Body?
Disease description:
Recently, my skin has developed scaly patches—what causes this “fish-scale” appearance?
Scaly, fish-like skin patches may indicate ichthyosis—a common inherited disorder characterized by abnormal keratinization of the skin. This condition is often associated with the patient’s immune function. Clinically, it typically presents as erythematous plaques and scaling; it is non-contagious. Affected skin is usually dry and lacks sebum. Management primarily focuses on moisturization. Under a physician’s guidance, topical agents such as urea ointment or tretinoin (vitamin A acid) ointment may be used.
