Patients with lumbar disc herniation should avoid bending over while working, as such activities—especially those involving forceful bending—can exacerbate the condition. Rest is recommended, along with a course of traditional Chinese herbal medicine aimed at achieving a thorough, long-term resolution. Lumbar disc herniation compresses spinal nerve roots; therefore, treatment primarily focuses on reducing nerve root edema. During the acute phase, strict bed rest is advised, and bending over during work or daily activities should be avoided as much as possible. While resting, patients should wear a thoracolumbar brace when getting out of bed to support the abdomen and minimize irritation to the nerve roots. This should be combined with medications that nourish nerves and promote dehydration (e.g., reduce edema). Once symptoms improve, strengthening exercises for the lumbar and back muscles—such as walking backward—should be initiated to help prevent recurrence.
