Pulmonary tuberculosis typically requires approximately six months to one year of treatment for a full cure; however, the exact duration depends on the individual patient’s condition. For newly diagnosed (previously untreated) pulmonary TB patients, standard anti-TB therapy lasts six months, followed by a four-month consolidation phase, and most patients achieve cure with this regimen. In contrast, retreatment cases—often complicated by drug resistance—generally require longer treatment durations, with a minimum of one year or more. Particularly for patients with multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (MDR-TB), treatment may extend to two years or longer. Overall, early diagnosis and prompt initiation of appropriate, adequately dosed, and full-course anti-TB therapy are essential for successful management of pulmonary tuberculosis.
