Differences Between Attenuated Live Vaccines and Inactivated Vaccines
Disease description:
Recently, it’s time for my child to receive vaccinations, but I’m unsure whether to choose a live attenuated vaccine or an inactivated vaccine. Could you please explain the differences between live attenuated vaccines and inactivated vaccines?
The main differences between attenuated live vaccines and inactivated vaccines are as follows:
1. Attenuated live vaccines are produced by reducing the pathogen’s virulence through various methods. A single dose can induce long-lasting immunity; however, these vaccines are relatively unstable and require stringent storage conditions, and carry a risk of reversion to virulence (i.e., potential for causing infection in immunocompromised individuals).
2. Inactivated vaccines are prepared by killing the pathogen using physical or chemical methods while preserving its immunogenicity. They offer high safety but typically require multiple doses to achieve adequate immunity.
