Disease description:

I’ve developed numerous small, itchy, and painful bumps on my body—I’m unsure whether they’re folliculitis or furuncles (boils). What are the differences between folliculitis and furuncles?

The key differences between a furuncle (boil) and folliculitis lie in their extent and severity. Furuncles are larger in size and can occur anywhere on the body, whereas folliculitis typically affects areas with dense hair growth—such as the scalp, axillae, and other hairy regions. A furuncle initially presents as a localized, painful nodule (furuncle swelling), which subsequently develops into an abscess often accompanied by varying degrees of tissue necrosis; if not promptly drained or treated, the abscess may enlarge. In contrast, folliculitis does not progress to such necrotic abscess formation, making the distinction between the two conditions quite significant. It is advisable to avoid spicy and irritating foods in daily life and instead consume foods rich in vitamins.
