The causes of low back pain in patients with cirrhosis are relatively complex. It may result from renal dysfunction induced by cirrhosis, or from ascites associated with cirrhosis—large volumes of ascites increase intra-abdominal pressure, thereby compressing the lumbar vertebrae and causing low back pain. Additionally, if a patient with cirrhosis develops hepatocellular carcinoma with bone metastases, involvement of the lumbar spine can also lead to low back pain. Patients experiencing low back pain or soreness should promptly seek evaluation and treatment at a reputable hospital.
