Can balanitis resolve on its own?
Disease description:
I have balanitis, and I’ve been experiencing unbearable itching recently. I’d like to know: can balanitis resolve on its own?
Whether balanitis can resolve spontaneously typically depends on its severity. In mild cases, maintaining proper local hygiene and wearing cotton, loose-fitting underwear may help prevent recurrent bacterial growth and promote spontaneous resolution. However, in more severe cases—often caused by bacterial or viral infection—symptoms tend to recur, requiring treatment under a physician’s guidance, such as topical anti-inflammatory ointments (e.g., erythromycin ointment) combined with oral medications. If balanitis is secondary to phimosis, circumcision is usually necessary for definitive treatment.
