Disease description:

I have high blood sugar and usually avoid eating fruit. Yesterday, my daughter bought me some cantaloupe to eat. I’d like to know whether elderly individuals with high blood sugar can eat cantaloupe.

Individuals with high blood sugar may consume honeydew melon in moderation, as it is a fruit with a moderate sugar content. If blood glucose levels are well-controlled—i.e., fasting blood glucose is maintained between 6.5–7.5 mmol/L, postprandial blood glucose between 7.5–8.5 mmol/L, and HbA1c at approximately 6.3%—a small portion of honeydew melon may be consumed between meals. However, excessive intake is not recommended. For those whose blood glucose remains poorly controlled, honeydew melon—and other fruits in general—should be avoided; instead, low-glycemic fruits that minimally affect blood glucose levels may be chosen.
