When the big toenail grows into the surrounding skin (ingrown toenail), prompt nail trimming is required, followed by application of an anti-inflammatory ointment—such as erythromycin ointment, mupirocin ointment, or compound polymyxin B ointment. If symptoms are severe, surgical intervention may be necessary to restore the health of the big toe. The surgical site must be thoroughly disinfected and sterilized both before and after the procedure.
