Can duodenal ulcers cause weight loss?
Disease description:
My father has had a duodenal ulcer for over six months, with recurrent episodes. Recently, I noticed he has lost a significant amount of weight. I would like to know: Can a duodenal ulcer cause weight loss?
Duodenal ulcers may lead to weight loss. This condition typically results from mucosal erosion of the duodenum caused by various etiologies, ultimately forming an ulcer. Major contributing factors include *Helicobacter pylori* infection, chronic alcohol consumption, and prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Classic symptoms consist of chronic, recurrent, and rhythmic upper abdominal pain. Additional manifestations may include decreased appetite and dyspepsia to varying degrees. The ulcer may impair digestive function, compromising digestion and nutrient absorption, thereby resulting in malnutrition and subsequent weight loss. Moreover, chronic gastrointestinal bleeding associated with the ulcer may lead to iron-deficiency anemia, which can also contribute to weight loss.
