Disease description:

My child has developed mouth ulcers and keeps complaining of oral pain—especially when eating. Are mouth ulcers the same as hand-foot-and-mouth disease?

Dr. Zhang Lei
Oral ulcers are not hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD). Oral ulcers primarily occur on the oral mucosa and are characterized by localized, round ulcerative lesions, often accompanied by pain. They typically heal spontaneously within 1–2 weeks without scarring. A hallmark of oral ulcers is their recurrent nature, with spontaneous resolution and symptom-free intervals between episodes. In contrast, HFMD commonly affects the hands, feet, and mouth, presenting primarily with vesicles, skin rashes, and fever; it is a rash-associated infectious disease.
