Consuming spicy foods and experiencing constipation is likely due to factors such as “excess internal heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept) or gastrointestinal dysfunction. Spicy foods are highly irritating and can readily stimulate the stomach and intestines. When gastrointestinal function is compromised, dysregulation may occur—intestinal motility slows down, prolonging fecal transit time in the gut. As a result, more water is absorbed from the stool, causing it to become dry and hard, thereby increasing the difficulty of defecation and leading to constipation. Additionally, spicy foods may irritate blood vessels in the rectal mucosa, potentially contributing to hemorrhoids, which can further exacerbate constipation.
