The primary distinction between rectal polyps and hemorrhoids lies in their differing etiologies. Rectal polyps are commonly associated with genetic factors, lifestyle and dietary habits, and congenital developmental abnormalities; hemorrhoids, by contrast, typically result from varicosity of the anal venous plexus and downward displacement of the anal cushions due to various contributing factors. Additionally, the clinical manifestations of rectal polyps and hemorrhoids differ. Rectal polyps often present with nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal distension, diarrhea, or hematochezia; whereas hemorrhoid patients commonly experience pruritus ani, anal pain, and protrusion of a palpable mass (e.g., a “lump” or “ball”) from the anus.
