How to Treat Angular Cheilitis in Toddlers
Disease description:
My child is four and a half years old. Recently, redness and swelling with pus have appeared at the corners of the mouth. The doctor diagnosed it as angular cheilitis. How is angular cheilitis treated in young children?
Toddlers are a high-risk group for angular cheilitis. After onset, the following management measures can be taken:
1. When the corners of the mouth become eroded, an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory solution—such as hydrogen peroxide solution—may be used for cleansing. If fissures are present, gentian violet solution may be applied. When no exudate is present, erythromycin ointment and fluocinolone acetonide cream can help alleviate symptoms.
2. Vitamin deficiency—particularly of vitamin B complex and riboflavin—can cause or exacerbate angular cheilitis; therefore, timely supplementation of these vitamins is essential.
