Can pregnant women use glycerin suppositories for constipation?
Disease description:
I’m four months pregnant, and I’ve been constipated for the past few days—I find bowel movements very difficult. Can pregnant women use glycerin suppositories (Kaisailu) for constipation?
Constipation during pregnancy generally does not warrant the use of glycerin suppositories (e.g., Kaisailu). Although glycerin suppositories can stimulate the intestines and promote bowel movements, they contain musk—a component that may pose a risk of miscarriage. Therefore, pregnant women should avoid using glycerin suppositories to relieve constipation.
To alleviate constipation, non-pharmacological approaches are recommended: adjusting diet and lifestyle habits, increasing dietary fiber and fluid intake, establishing regular bowel habits, and engaging in appropriate physical activity—all of which help enhance intestinal motility.
