Can iron supplementation during pregnancy cause constipation?
Disease description:
I recently had a prenatal checkup, and my doctor told me I’m slightly anemic and need to take iron supplements. After starting the supplements, I began experiencing constipation. Is constipation a common side effect of iron supplementation during pregnancy?
Iron supplementation during pregnancy commonly causes constipation; even non-pregnant individuals may experience constipation when taking iron supplements. Pregnant women are inherently more prone to constipation, so iron supplementation tends to exacerbate this condition. It is recommended to consume ample fresh vegetables and fruits daily, which not only enhance iron absorption but also help alleviate constipation and simultaneously provide vitamin C. Additionally, drinking warm water or mild saline water on an empty stomach each morning is advised to help establish regular bowel habits.
