Not all colonic polyps require surgical removal. For multiple inflammatory polyps smaller than 0.5 cm in diameter, surgical excision is generally unnecessary; however, patients should undergo follow-up colonoscopy every 6–12 months to monitor changes in the size and morphology of the polyps. Inflammatory polyps larger than 1 cm may cause intestinal obstruction and thus warrant surgical removal. Adenomatous polyps carry a risk of malignant transformation and should be surgically removed early.
