Disease description:

I’m three weeks pregnant, and the corners of my mouth have been painful. Today, they developed into ulcers. What causes angular cheilitis (cracks or sores at the mouth corners) during pregnancy?

Cracks at the corners of the mouth in pregnant women are often caused by vitamin deficiency. Angular cheilitis typically presents bilaterally, with moist, slightly reddened lips and exudate. Other associated manifestations may include cheilitis (inflammation of the lips), glossitis (inflammation of the tongue), tip-of-tongue hyperemia and swelling, an unevenly textured tongue coating—some areas appearing yellow, others bright red or dark red—and patchy, irregular coating distribution. Additionally, the tongue may appear swollen and reddened, and distinct tooth marks may be evident along the lateral margins upon waking. Oral supplementation with vitamin B2 (riboflavin), multivitamin-mineral tablets, and other B-complex vitamins is recommended.
